Happy New Year - with Riesling!

We hope you've had a fantastic holiday break and the start to 2012 has been appropriately festive.

Thank you everybody who emailed, tweeted and dropped in to say nice things about the Lark Hill Wines you enjoyed over your holiday celebrations. Each vintage we make is an unique snapshot of its year - both in terms of our vineyard and our own lives. It means a lot to share our passion and these milestones with you.

We are starting the Summer of 2012 with a few interesting changes;

The first is the release of our 2010 Pinot Noir; an elegant, savoury wine from a cooler year. You can try this wine at the cellar door, or matched with food in our Vineyard Restaurant.

The second is our new Restaurant menu - with summer-themed dishes featuring some great local produce.

Finally, we are participating in the Summer of Riesling again this year, including having some back vintages of our Riesling available by the glass at our Vineyard Restaurant.

Bookings are recommended on 0262380266 or restaurant@larkhillwine.com.au

A look at 6 years in Grüner Veltliner

It's now more than 6 years since we planted our Grüner Veltliner vines - so here are a couple of images that show the change.
Both were taken from the same spot, looking the same direction.
The first image was taken in Winter 2005 on a snowy morning.
We used a large bulldozer to rip the ground up. The 'native soil' at Lark Hill is heavily depleted shale over deep clays, with a low pH and low nutrition. Our next step after breaking up the compacted soil is to spread compost (for nutrients and organic matter), lime (to raise the pH) and an organic fertiliser.

The second image was taken in November 2011. What a difference!

Stay tuned as we put more images up from the 2011 growing season, as well as some more of block preparation and planting.

Meet Lark Hill - the horse

Years ago we were contacted by a horse racing syndicate who had just bought a foal - called "Larkhill". Whilst the connection was obvious, we weren't able to find a spare small-fortune to help sponser Larkhill (the horse) and lost touch.

Lark Hill Horse drinking waterThis weekend Larkhill (the horse) came back into our lives - his new owners came to visit us.

Lark Hill the security horse

Larkhill is a 17 hand high bay gelding; the son of Danasinga, winner of multiple Group 1 races and is the grandson of champion sprinter Danehill (USA). Larkhill had an extremely promising start to his racing career winning twice and placing twice in his first four races. His career was cut short due the development of a respiratory complaint following the outbreak of Equine Influenza in 2007.

However, he now works as a Mounted Security horse at the Randwick Racecourse - helping with crowd control on busy race days.

We are told that Larkhill has a wonderful temperament and his unflappable nature makes him the perfect choice around busy crowds.

We look forward to staying in touch with Larkhill in this new phase of his life.
